Its 3,000 kilometres of beautiful beaches lined with palm trees and bathed by the Indian Ocean make this south-east African country a great destination in which to relax. If you like animals, it’s also the perfect destination: a wild paradise for the most adventurous travellers.

The great African beach

Maputo Nature Reserve is home to a refuge for elephants where you can also see crocodiles, wildebeest and the odd lion. There are more than 500 species of fish in Lake Niassa, and Gorongosa National Park is home to more than 300 species and aquatic birds that live in the wetlands alongside the River Urema. In the Bazaruto archipelago you can swim with dolphins and loggerhead turtles, while in the Quirimbas archipelago you can enjoy 250 kilometres of coral islands. Many of Mozambique’s beaches are completely unspoilt and almost deserted, while others are ideal for water sports. One of the most popular beaches is Tofo, where you can also enjoy the fresh fish and seafood. The island of Mozambique is connected to the mainland by a bridge that we recommend you cross.

The official currency is the metical. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices. We recommend you carry cash.

Portuguese is the official language and used for all public and administrative issues. The majority of the population speaks minority ethnic languages.

There are two very different seasons. The rainy season from November to April, and the dry season from May to October.
